The Art of Screaming!
Susan Carr

In this audience participating workshop, Susan will provide a brief history of screams in rock music, explain why special techniques are needed for rock singers, demonstrate specific exercises that develop proper techniques for supporting and placing the screams, and analyze lyrics of rock songs to see where screams should be used.

Susan M. Carr developed her vocal studio for rock singers in Seattle in 1979, where Susan’s main focus is technique. She prepares students for recording, touring and presentation. Her training includes a BFA in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy and a two-year teaching assistantship under Dr. Marietta Coyle. Several of her students have gained recognition at the Grammys:  Macklemore, The Head &  the Heart,  Mastodon, Alice in Chains, and Alien Ant Farm. Well known bands that Susan has taught are: Minus the Bear, All, Sunny Day Real Estate, Drowning Pool, Boy Hits Car and many others. Her instructional DVD, “The Art of Screaming!” gained national attention in radio and print. Apple has named Susan's iPhone App "The Art of Screaming-Create Your Own Vocal Warm up" as the #1 Instructional App.

To Act of Not to Act: Why is That the Question?
Natalie Lerch

Many singers find it difficult to move from the technical aspects of singing to the communication of the character and/or text. This workshop will focus on how to "marry" the two things we must do all the time: sing with good technique and communicate our intentions, thoughts and feelings.

Natalie Lerch teaches voice, diction, repertoire, pedagogy, and opera scenes at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. She has her DMA from the Eastman School of Music. Natalie has sung in masterclasses for Renée Fleming and Julianne Baird, and performed Samuel Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” with the Port Angeles Symphony.  Natalie’s choral experience includes the soprano quartet “Divalycious”, Duruflé’s Requiem in Canterbury, England, and has formed a female quartet called “Fine Rain Falling”.  She has performed with Seattle Philharmonic in Ravel’s Shéhérazade and Mahler’s 4th Symphony. In her free time, she rides her horse, Mocha!!

Lightning Talks with Nancy Bos, Yanik Giroux, & Marieke Schuurs

Lightening Talks are short, unrelated talks, 15 minutes in this instance, followed by a group Q&A. Lightening Talks expose the audience to new ideas and the opportunity to follow up with the presenter at a later time.

Voice to Vox: A Journey to Becoming a Voice Actor   Nancy Bos
Voiceover work is an easy skill jump from singing expert, but there are many steps to learning the procedures and acquiring the right equipment. Nancy will describe the steps of her entertaining journey and provide opportunities to learn more about developing a voice over side business.

Brand Yourself Into Your Own Studio   Yanik Giroux
The concept of "branding" is not a new one, but branding ourselves as artists or musicians may be a new idea worth considering. "Your vibe attracts your tribe" supports the idea that each of us should strive for a studio in our image and trust that our uniqueness in personality and approach will attract the students we want and deserve. Everyday we tell our students to "find their voice." Let's find ours!

Changing Habits: Mind/Body Habit Creation and Change   Marieke Schuurs
Ever wonder why your student can learn a new idea in warm-ups but then reverts to their old way when singing a song? Based on the Alexander Technique teaching principles, Marieke offers both insights and practical information on how our mind/body creates habits, and how to change them effectively.
